The Role

Based in our offices in Nottingham, the role of the Studio Editor is to both assist and lead in the planning and execution of the end-to-end activity for all games created by the Design Studio. You will be responsible for briefing out work, writing and editing new rules material, working with and editing copy and fiction from freelance designers and ensuring all books, game components, marketing materials, game support material and product packaging is laid out and delivered accurately and on time for production to the high quality that Mantic demands. You will help develop and deliver plans alongside the marketing and sales teams to ensure all assets and product information is available in-line with the company release schedule and sales requirements. Working within the studio, with other editors, our marketing team and freelance designers and sculptors, you will be part of an exciting team producing high quality, innovative and visually attractive gaming and hobby products.

You must have excellent English literary skills and a demonstrable ability to test, write and edit high quality gaming material including rules, instructions and guides. You must be practical, with strong commercial and project management skills. You must have excellent organisational skills and a professional approach to time management, team work and deadlines. You must be able to work on and deliver multiple projects at once and on schedule, and capable of managing multiple internal and external resources on concurrent projects.


Including but not limited to:

  • Planning and delivering end-to-end Studio activity from concepts and range planning to completed files and components into production on time. This will include projects for existing lines, new releases and major new product launches as well as ad-hoc initiatives.
  • Work closely with sales, marketing and operational teams to ensure all products are fully understood by delivering required assets on time.
  • Work with the senior management team to ensure all agreed deliverables for all projects are on time and of high quality.
  • Editing, testing and/or writing rules, guides and product descriptions for Mantic’s range of new and existing products. Editing some fiction as required.
  • Ensuring all components are accurate and complete before being passed into production.
  • The delivery, on schedule, of all completed print materials and sculpts required as part of the agreed output of the studio. This will include projects for existing lines, new releases and major new product launches as well as ad-hoc initiatives.
  • Work with internal staff, 3rd parties, freelancers and licensors as required. Project manage work that has been outsourced (e.g. rules writing, design work, sculpting) to ensure deadlines are met and quality is maintained.
  • Assisting in range and product planning, specification, supplier sourcing and product margins and costings.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent project management and organisational skills, running and delivering multiple concurrent projects on time, often with competing resources.
  • Commercial experience editing both fiction and gaming material (rulebooks, sourcebooks or similar) or commercial editorial experience and a long-term war-gamer/hobbyist.
  • A deep and proven understanding of how to deliver clear, concise and fun rules and gaming material. An appreciation of the customer and how to present information in the right way.
  • A good understanding of the print process and how to manage it from conception to reality.
  • Strong commercial and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages.
  • Excellent communication and team management skills.
  • Previous work experience within the gaming industry beneficial but not required.
  • Some skills and experience of InDesign and Photoshop would be beneficial.
  • Experience of using the Wrike project management tool would be beneficial.
