A guide to constructing a Kings of War army list – part two

In the second part of his series, Nick Williams adds a Gore Rider Wing to his orc army. My experience with this type of army tells me that it’s not just the big Stampede Hordes that are tricky, but it’s the numerous fast units also buzzing about. Before you can even deal with the Stampedes, you have to take care of the fast units. Gore Riders are perfect for this. They’re respectable heavy cavalry and while they’ve got fairly low Nerve at 13/15, they do get Crushing Strength(1) so still fight effectively in drawn out combats. They are also cheaper than other heavy cavalry units! I’d like to fit as many of these in as possible, but three regiments of them feels like a good starting point. Like the Fightwagon Hordes, Gore Riders work best when double charging enemy units. With three regiments, I can lose one or have one charge blocked and still have a very effective force. In terms of support, this Battlegroup requires an Inspiring source, so another Mounted Flagger will be taken for this group. If I have the points to spare at the end I’d like to take a War Drum for this group as [...]

A guide to constructing a Kings of War army list – part one

Written by Nick Williams One of the articles that players in the community requested was an article not just on how to write an army list, but an example of the thought process that goes into an example army list itself. So, with my Abyssal army having nearly a solid year of gaming under its belt and suffering from multiple plane and train journeys (including two trans-Atlantic flights and two other flights where it had to be checked into the cargo hold…), it’s time for it to retire and for me to put together another army for this year. I’m leaning strongly towards Orcs. Specifically reviving a theme that I’ve used a few times – all cavalry. I really like the Orc Gore Riders. I’ve ran a similar list in the past that concentrated on Gore Riders and did quite well with it. I’d like to try that again, so let’s talk through planning a 2,000 point army. One of my favourite opponents, Dan King, runs his Herd army around two Stampede units, backed up by numerous faster units and some cheaper throwaway units. It’s a really effective build that I think can be replicated with Orcs with an often [...]

Mantic Games launches The Walking Dead: All Out War painting competition

After the success of last year’s Brush With Death Painting Competition, we’re delighted to announce that we’re now launching a dedicated painting contest for The Walking Dead: All Out War. That’s right, we want to see your incredible work on Rick, or perhaps a stunning paint job on a particularly nasty Walker. Plus, we’ve even got a special category for diorama pieces featuring two or more miniatures, which means you can recreate some of the iconic moments from the comic – Rick meeting back up with Lori and Carl, Dale keeping watch in the Atlanta Camp, Rick riding through Atlanta on his horse, surrounded by Walkers… the choice is yours! The prestigious Brush With Death trophy. The Mantic Team will have the challenging task of picking the overall winner in each category. Each winner will be awarded our superb Brush with Death trophy, pictured above. There are two categories to choose from: The Walking Dead: All Out War – Single Miniature The Walking Dead: All Out War – Diorama Here’s a great Kickstarter exclusive Negan, as painted by Paul Welsh. New Year, New Game: Warpath

For those of you of a Sci-Fi gaming orientation, 2017 is going to be a great year. Mantic’s Sci-Fi wargame, Warpath will hit stores in April, alongside a slew of new releases to accompany the game. Set in the same shared universe as Deadzone, DreadBall and Star Saga, Warpath scales up the conflict between the various races to all out war, wherein the fates of whole planets hang in the balance. But in a galaxy where even planets can be bought and sold, life is cheap. A New Kind of War Warpath comes in two variations. The first, which just holds the title of ‘Warpath’ is designed for massive sci-fi battles. Units are abstracted into teams, streamlining play and allowing you to scale the games you play up to apocalyptic levels. Whole platoons of infantry march into battle alongside sophisticated war machines weathering orbital fire from enemy spacecraft. This is the mass-battle gaming at its best.   Warpath: Firefight is for those who prefer a more in-depth experience in their sci-fi wargames. Units are comprised of individual models, led into battle by heroes and commanders instructing troops on the ground. These games tend to be smaller than Warpath games, but no less exciting [...]

New Year, New Game: The Walking Dead: All Out War

Despite the fact that The Walking Dead: All Out War didn’t hit retail until the end of the year, it’s already having a huge impact on the gaming community. Since launch we’ve seen some incredible paint jobs over on the The Walking Dead Fanatics Facebook group, watched some great gameplay videos and spent an entire weekend playing with the guys/gals at Beasts of War. Wave 2 The first wave of the Kickstarter shipped in November and we’re now busy at work on Wave Two. All the rulebooks, equipment cards, Survivor cards and event cards have been approved by Skybound, while the studio has been busy playtesting and proof-reading the new expansions.   We’re planning to start shipping wave two to Kickstarter backers in the spring. Wave Two includes a host of great products, like the Greene Farm and Woodbury expansions, plus Survivors such as the mutilated version of the Governor, Tyreese, one-handed Rick and Hershel. All these releases will then be spread out at retail through the remainder of 2017 and 2018. Creating your own Survivors Just in case you didn’t know, in the Days Gone Bye expansion, there are rules for creating your own Survivors. Recently we’ve seen more and more community-created characters (including a few cheeky [...]

New Year, New Game: Dreadball 2

When we launched DreadBall back in 2012, it quickly became a firm favourite among tabletop gamers. Thanks to its super fast gameplay, simple rules and teams that were full of character, DreadBall was a great introduction to miniature gaming and Mantic products in general. Then with the launch of DreadBall Xtreme in 2015, we looked at the dirty underbelly of DreadBall. This was a fantastic introduction to the Warpath Universe before people jumped into the more complex worlds of Deadzone or Warpath. It also introduced even more teams to the original DreadBall, taking the count up to 24! However, over time it became clear that those teams released in season six were at a significant advantage over the teams released at the beginning, thanks to improved abilities and different stats. So earlier this year we launched the DreadBall 2 Kickstarter to fund a brand new version of the greatest game in the galaxy, with improved rules, more balanced stats and expanded rules for league play. DreadBall 2 will be launched at retail in late 2017 and we’re excited to see the new teams hitting the pitch. We’ll be keeping you updated throughout 2017 with more details about the launch and [...]

New Year, New Game: Deadzone

In May this year we officially launched the second edition of our sci-fi skirmish game, Deadzone. The idea behind the second edition was simple – we already had a great range of miniatures but the gameplay needed to be streamlined to make it more accessible, faster and, most importantly, more fun! If you’ve played the second edition then you’ll hopefully agree that we’ve achieved all those three things. If you haven’t played the second edition, then we’re pleased to announce that you can currently pick up the hardback rulebook for half price, which means you can give it a go at home! Oh, and if you need a new Deadzone mat, the Exham IV Deluxe Gaming Mat is currently half price too! But what does 2017 and beyond hold for Deadzone? GCPS Faction In 2017 we’ll be releasing brand new GCPS units as part of the wider Warpath launch. You’ll be able to pick up new, highly detailed, hard plastic GCPS troops with various weapon options. So, it seemed only right that the GCPS should get their own faction in Deadzone too. This means that in the summer, we’ll be releasing a GCPS Faction Starter and Faction Booster containing everything [...]

New Year, New Game: Kings of War in 2017

2017 is going to be a huuuuuuge year for Kings of War and we’ve got plenty of exciting miniatures and events lined up for all you KoW fans. Kings of War Army Sets But, let’s do the ugly stuff first. Over the last 18 months we have been hit with a heap of price rises, and on top of that the dollar prices have risen too. We have soaked this up for as long as we can, and held the armies sets at £50 this year, even though the regiment sets all went up in price. However, the current Kings of War army sets will be going up to £59.99 from Feb 1st. We will look at reconfiguring the sets to see if we can bring them back to £50, and offer a better starter force at the same time. However, that does still give you 30 days to pick them up at the existing price, so if you’ve been thinking of starting KoW or picking up a new army for the summer campaign, there’s no better time than now! Plus, we’ve currently got a special offer on the softback Gamer’s Edition of the rulebook. Tournament Book Currently we’re busy [...]
