Our brand new Ogre Army range starts shipping next week!

In celebration we are hosting a whole week of wonderful Ogre related articles. Up first we wanted to give you the low down on the design choices behind these awesome new minis.

So, it’s Ogre to Dave from the studio team

What did we want to achieve?

We wanted this kit to replace the original Ogre PVC models that were released as part of the original Kings of War Kickstarter campaign. These sculpts were traditionally sculped using Green Stuff, sawdust, unicorn tears and absolute skill! However it did leave us with limited options poses and variety and they unfortunately they skipped leg day.

But what a difference 10 years makes!

Aesthetically we were more than happy with how we styled the Ogres. However we wanted to push ourselves to create something truly outstanding and in addition create a frame with a lot of options to build from! More poses, more heads, more weapons. Something you could really build an army from. So we were looking at taking the original designs and turning them up to 11!

Capturing the Ogres and their lore!

I recall explaining to our lead sculptor Luigi, that ogres construct their armour one piece at a time. Each ferocious Ogre warrior earns their coin as an expert soldier for hire and in turn spend their hard fought pay in upgrading their armour. This meant that there is a rich and varied design space to incorporate the piecemeal aesthetic of their armour into each and every sculpt (whilst ensuring there is that chisive army look and feel).  I hope you will agree that the new miniatures carry the style of the original miniatures forward, whilst adding little flourishes cast in the ogres’ own distinctive style.

Leg Day….

One of the most important updates we wanted to make with the new miniatures was to the ogres’ physical build. The original PVC models were a a bit top-heavy and as said above, they seemed to have “skipped leg day” at the local Ogre Gold’s Gym. Now, the Vanguard Heroes we made for the Ogres back in 2020 are incredible (Ed. The Berzerker Bully is my favourite in the whole range) and using those as a base, we build the proportions into the new designs to give them the imposing bulk they deserve! Ogres should look and feel like living battering rams!

We have also introduced some more female ogres which begun with the Ogre Matriarch model, that was again designed for Vanguard.

As you can see from the image of the frame below, each set (of 2 unique frames) comes with six ogres, each of whom can be built with either a hand weapon and shield, a two-handed weapon, or a Boomer gun. we have also provided a good verity of heads (some shouting some just being grumpy) and have made sure that you can mix and match with the old miniatures if you have spares you want to use! The Crossbows are available as a separate resin upgrade piece.
