How to play the Whisperers in The Walking Dead: All Out War

13th Aug 2020

Rob Burman

The Whisperers – only of the most eagerly awaited factions for The Walking Dead: All Out – are about to make their presence felt! However, because the Whisperers are able to disguise themselves as Walkers, they play very differently to many of the factions we’ve seen previously.

In today’s blog, we’ll give you a brief rundown of how to use the Whisperers effectively, and cause your enemies to join the ever-growing hordes of undead.

MINIONS

No, not the yellow, banana-loving kind. The awful, stab you in the back when you least expect it kind. The Whisperers have a new keyword: Minion.

This new rule gives you lots of flexibility when creating your list, as there’s no limit on the amount of minions you can take. This is why we’ve made the Minion Booster pack, alongside the standard faction set.

The downside is the Minions are very weak compared to your typical survivor but they can be tooled up with bows and flaming arrows.

WHISPERER

The other big addition to the rules is the Whisperer keyword.

All the models in the Whisperer faction have this keyword. This means you can sneak around the board using the Walkers as a meat shield and stop getting shot. This is a big gameplay change, as a lot of lists tend to be very heavy on long-range shooting. Now the Whisperers will have somewhere to hide.

Of course, you can also use this rule to send Walkers into combat with your enemy too, or potentially get them to help in combat because they’ll always side with the Whisperers for the outnumbering bonus.

The Walkers have always been an additional weapon in All Out War, but combined with the Whisperers, they’re truly deadly.

If you’ve got Alpha as your leader then the Whisperer ability becomes even more useful. That’s because Alpha can move ALL the Walkers in her Kill Zone (rather than just one) and she can even move other Whisperers too. This means you can keep her hidden from view almost, while she floods the field with Walkers.

ONE OF THE HERD

But that’s not all!

The One of the Herd keyword brings everything together to ensure that the Whisperers can remain hidden until they’re ready to spring their attack.

Perhaps one of the most interesting elements is the fact you’ll start with more Walkers on the board. Normally the last thing you want is extra Walkers, but the Whisperers need them as a screen against the rival gang. During set-up you want as many Walkers in your area as possible, which is a very different strategy to normal.

Then during the game you want to keep the Walkers close to ensure you don’t Panic – which is fantastic late in the game when your opponent is likely to be starting to lose their head. Plus, having the Walkers nearby means you can deflect attacks onto them too.

With these new abilities, the Whisperers play like nothing else in The Walking Dead: All Out War.

THE WHISPERERS AND ANTHOLOGY WILL BE SHIPPING FROM AUGUST 24TH. YOU CAN PRE-ORDER FROM YOUR LOCAL GAMING STORE OR DIRECT FROM THE MANTIC WEBSITE USING THE LINKS BELOW.
