4th Edition: Unit Profile Examples
Around now, the major Kings of War podcasts will be starting their own exciting series of preview episodes of different rules aspects and some example faction lists of 4th Edition - so we thought it would be useful to look at some example profiles visually in the run-up to that.
Together we've already looked at many of the major changes in the rules, and how army building has been updated for the new edition. So just as those podcasts are starting up, let's talk a little about the units themselves.
Every unit has been reviewed, with some staying broadly the same, and others getting adjusted, so let’s take a look at some examples of some v3 profiles, and then their v4 updates. (Remember that the US and Height have been removed from the profile as they are now standard values for unit size and type!)
Okay, let’s dive into some examples:
Core
First up, the Depth Horrors – which now have an exciting new hard plastic kit. With this, and all the units that follow - we'll start with their 3rd edition profile and then show the 4th edition version.
Note that they have become Monstrous Infantry – one of the very few units outside the heroes that have increased base size.
This is to bring them inline with the existing Depth Horror Eternal Hero model base size (50mm). They are also big beasts and need the room!
Auxiliary
Notice how the Troop in this profile is tagged with (AUX). That means the Troop is an Auxiliary choice, while the Regiment and Horde are both Core choices.
Specialist
These Air Elementals can now conjure the power of a storm!
Support
This Giant from the Goblin list gives a Nerve boost to units with the Green Horde Trait – typically the Core and Auxiliary units in the list.
Note that Titans are just Monsters on 75mm bases. Giants are extra tall, which is why it has a Height exception: Height (6) instead of the normal Height (5) for a Monster.
Commanders
Champions
The Ice Queen’s special rule has been simplified to Elite on spells she casts (which would include any she purchased from the Arcane Library). Her spell costs are reduced too.
Warlords
So the most obvious thing here is his name! We’ve amended it slightly – the middle “a” felt a bit unnecessary. Rakwas is a little faster now and more impactful in a wider area, with a Vicious Aura and Very Inspiring.
He also heals himself with Iron Resolve (2) – part of his background and the myth about how he can’t be killed…
New Heroes!
What does a Hero from our Champions game look like in Kings of War? Here’s a couple of examples.
The old [1] notation is now used for Battalion limitations of certain units ([1], [2]…).
Unique units and options now have [U] instead – such as the named characters above.
And what about the Xirkaali?
OK… you twisted my arm. Let’s look at the Xirkaali Warrior Pack (Core)...
...and the Lionsnarl Cavalry (Specialist)...
…and here’s Xorxoi (“Zor Zoy”)(Champion)...
So there you have it, a quick run through of some units and how they now look in the new version.
Listen out for some army list previews and more on the various Kings of War podcasts over the next couple of weeks!
New blogs, videos and stories will be dropping regularly between now and the launch of 4th Edition in December 2025.
