Kings of War Slow Grow Challenge Episode 8: Community Spotlight #2

3rd Apr 2026

Alex Gordon

Last week we posted our first Slow Grow Community Spotlight, showcasing some of the armies taking shape during Stage One of the Slow Grow Challenge.

We’ve got more to share this week, with another four projects that caught our eye. Let’s dive in!

Adam (Illinois, USA) – Salamanders

Adam is building a striking Salamanders force, making the most of Kings of War’s first fully 3D-printable army.

Komodon

Having only recently got into the game properly with 4th edition, this is his first complete army, and he’s embraced multi-basing from the outset with a jungle ruins theme.

After experimenting with different approaches, he settled on a bold red-and-black scheme with bright blue accents for flames and details, helping the units stand out clearly on the tabletop.

Mage Priest

Like many of us, he’s balancing hobby time around a busy life, but he told us that the structure of the Slow Grow, along with support from a couple of local friends, has helped keep things moving forward.

He’s thinking of adding Fire Elementals in Stage Two, and painting them blue to match the blue flames elsewhere in the army. We’re looking forward to seeing it!

Bob (UK) – Halflings

Bob has taken a characterful approach to his Halflings, building his force around the lore of Aeron Cadwallader and the conflicts he’s been involved in – including fighting back against the current Xirkaali invasion, as depicted in Stand at Callenspire. With no official model available for Aeron yet, he’s created his own version, complete with a custom scenic base and banner reflecting his army’s identity.

His painting process leans on using multiple layers of speed-paints and drybrushing to get strong tabletop results quickly, with a focus on how the army reads at a distance rather than getting lost in fine detail.

We think the results look great! Bob’s army is full of personality, and we’re excited to see where he'll take it in the remaining stages of the challenge.

Incidentally, Bob is one of the hosts of the Tales from the Warrior’s Hall podcast, which covers various miniature wargaming topics with a focus on Kings of War. He’s even talked about his slow grow project in some of the recent episodes, and it makes for perfect background listening while you sit down to paint. Check it out!

Filip (Sweden) – Abyssal Dwarfs

Filip took the plunge into Kings of War with an Abyssal Dwarf force, using the Slow Grow Challenge as the motivation he needed to get started.

Regiment of Immortal Guard

Inspired by the Immortal Guard and their striking demon mask aesthetic, he built his first 500 points around a regiment of Immortal Guard, a troop of Grotesques and an Ironcaster.

Ironcaster

Opting for a gold-heavy scheme with blue accents for a more regal feel, he stepped away from his usual speed-painting method to focus on good old fashioned layers and washes – an approach he told us was inspired by Stephan’s army, which we featured on the blog back in February!

Filip told us that he never gets anything done without a deadline – so we were very happy that the Slow Grow Challenge provided him with just that, and the impetus to finally get started with Kings of War, having eyed it from afar for a while.

Stage One complete!

With the first milestone completed just in time, he’s already looking ahead to expanding the army further in the next stage – he mentioned Obsidian Golems as a possible next addition. We can’t wait to see them!

Tim (UK) – Trident Realm

Tim is a long-time hobbyist and gamer, but he’s completely new to Kings of War. He posts as Witch and Wolf Miniatures on Instagram, where he showcases a range of miniature games, and was keen to feature some Mantic models – especially for Kings of War!

Troop of Depth Horrors

We sent him a Trident Realm box to get him started and invited him to join the Slow Grow Challenge. Although he hasn’t quite hit 500 points yet, he’s a fantastic painter, and it shows – his Depth Horrors look superb (and utterly terrifying!).

Be sure to check out Tim's work on Instagram. We're very excited to see more of his Trident Realm force painted up!

Wrapping Up

Thanks again to everyone taking part in the Slow Grow Challenge. It’s amazing to see so many armies coming together from all corners of the community. Please keep your updates coming! Although it’s not possible to feature every project on the blog, we are looking out for them, and we’ll be showcasing more armies as the challenge continues.

Next week, we’ll be checking back in with the Team Mantic challengers, to see how they’re getting on with Stage Two. Stay tuned!

Depth Horror Regiment

The majority of surface dwellers who encounter the denizens of the Trident Realm are mostly familiar with the naiads, but these humanoid warriors are but a hint of the strangeness lurking in the depths of the ocean. When the Trident Realm goes to war, they do so alongside many great monsters of the seabed – such as Depth Horrors.

It is said that these powerful creatures may be found in regions such as the kingdom of Myrrhimm. Here, watchtowers line either side of an enormously deep trench, their bioluminescent beacons pulsating should any trespasser draw near. And of course, should any unwanted being venture into the kingdom itself, the hulking Depth Horrors will be waiting to strike without compassion from the inky darkness…

Halfling Stalwarts & Juggers Pack

Some units of halflings have made soldiering a full-time profession. These Stalwarts are better equipped than the Trained Bands, with metal armour (a mix of thick leather and plate mail), helmets and strong shields. Heavier battle cavalry, mounted on armoured aralez are armed with lances. They are designated as knights by outsiders simply because their weapons, equipment, and battlefield role is similar to the knights of other armies. However, as the halflings have no noble class, the name ‘knights’ is misleading in the true sense. The halflings themselves know them as Juggers.

Kaisenor Lancers Troop

The large pack-hunters known as Kaisenor Raptors have flourished in the plains of the Three Kings, where they live on the edge of the jungle during the hottest parts of the day. The beasts sport a deep red skin, slashed with yellow and orange bands, while their sanguine eyes smoulder with deep cunning and a spark of devilish fire. They are left to learn and hone their hunting and killing skills before being captured and trained to be ridden. Sleek and agile predators, their ability to move in formation at speed makes them excellent cavalry mounts.
