Kings of War Champions: Campaigns and Multiplayer Battles

If you've been paying attention this week, you may have noticed that beta rules for campaigns and multiplayer battles have been added in the Mantic Companion for Kings of War Champions. Today, the blog is taken over by none other than the Goblin King* himself, Rob Burman, to tell us more about these new ways of playing Champions. Take it away, Rob...
* We could have described him as "designer of the game", but we're told that this is the title he prefers.
There have been some exciting developments for Champions over on the Mantic Companion recently. Not only are the stats for all Companies now available but you can also find beta rules for mini campaigns and multiplayer games… more on those in a moment.
COMPANY STATS
Have you ever wondered how powerful La’theal Voidheart is? Have you woken up in the middle of night thinking about what the Faction Orders for the ogres might be? Or perhaps you’ve just wanted to longingly stare at how adorable Axel’s little friend Splish is. Well, great news! If you're a paid subscriber to the Companion, you can now view the stats for the various Companies.
This is fantastic for a number of reasons. Firstly, if you’ve got the miniatures already, you can now create a Champions Company without having to purchase a boxset. This is great news for Kings of War players - especially now the Champions models are available to buy individually.
Or perhaps you’re considering what Company to buy next. Now you can see what Company suits your playstyle. Want to smash stuff in the face? Say hello to the ogres. Want to run away screaming while shooting mawpups? The goblins are the faction for you.
And lastly, you can learn what to expect before facing a new Company you’ve never played against and (hopefully) plan accordingly. Or just get lost in the delightful, watery eyes of Splish. I often open the Companion with the intention of doing the former, only to end up doing the latter.
CAMPAIGN RULES
Champions has been available for around a year now, so we thought this was a good opportunity to give people a new way to play the game. The Campaign Rules offer some simple mechanics for you and your gaming group to play through interlinked games, which will see your Companies earn Battle Honours that can be used to unlock new abilities and new Faction Orders.
We always wanted Champions to be a super quick game to pick up and play, so the campaign rules reflect this simplicity. You can easily keep track of what Battle Honours you’ve earned and then level up a unit once they’ve earned three honours. Then it’s a case of rolling on a table to see if they get increased speed, more attacks, etc. Your Champion can potentially learn brand new Faction Orders too - including one that allows you to counter attack against an opponent. Juicy stuff!
However, you’ve got to be careful because Routed units can also get injured. This could see them slow down or stop them receiving Faction Orders. Thankfully these are elite warriors so they’re easily able to shake off any injuries before the next game. Basically we didn’t want a player to fall behind too much during the course of a short campaign.
The campaign rules are in beta and we’re looking for feedback on whether some abilities or Faction Orders are too powerful/not good enough before they become ‘official’.
MULTIPLAYER GAMES
We know there are plenty of gaming groups out there at the moment with multiple Companies so the multiplayer rules give you the opportunity to gather all your factions up for an all-out four-player brawl.
The rules are mostly the same as a standard game of Champions, however these (potentially temporary) alliances mean that a Champion’s special rules now apply to both factions allied together. Even better, you can mix together your six Faction Orders and issue them to all units in a team.
Goblins with +1 Defence? Yes please, thanks to the Northern Alliance Faction Order! Basilean knights re-rolling ones to hit and ones to damage one because of the Ogre orders? Well that sounds positively disgusting.
We fully expect there will be some very nasty combinations in the multiplayer so these rules are also in beta to make sure we can keep an eye on what sick combos everyone comes up with… and potentially amend things accordingly.
With all these new ways to play and a web offer to pick up multiple faction boxes with a hefty discount… there’s never been a better time to get playing Champions. Even better, I'm currently working with Mantic on more Companies for release later this year. If you dabbled in Champions last year but haven't played in a while, now could be a natural time to dust off those minis and get playing again.
See you on the battlefield!
