OverDrive Locker Room: Introducing Dozer

Welcome Coaches to the OverDrive Locker Room! This is the place to come for exclusive sneak peeks at the players you’ll be battling it out with in the arena when OverDrive launches this September. In each blog we’ll be taking a closer look at the background, stats and tactics for each player. Today we’re starting with the teleporting space turtle that can shell out the damage… it’s DOZER!

If you want to learn a bit more about how the game plays, before reading about each character, check out this video from Blackjack Legacy, which explains the basics.

BACKGROUND

It’s unclear if Dozer is the original Dozer that first made her name in the Inter Ring Cup XII, as no one is quite sure how long female Teratons live – and they’re too scared to ask. Nevertheless, her talents on the pitch are infamous and once she gets into the scoring zone, it’s hard to shift her. In one classic match, she retreated into her shell before being hit by Karadon and stayed there for several hours, not realising the match had finished and her side had won long before she finally emerged into a dimly lit arena with a jani-bot gently poking her shell with a broom.

STATS & TACTICS

Dozer is one of the strongest Players in the opening line-up. With a Strength of 3+ she’s able to hit rival Players hard when she’s Slamming or Slamming Back. As a result, your opposing coach is really going to have to commit some serious muscle into taking her out – often relying on using two Players to add an additional threat.

Initially her Agility of 5+ might look a problem when it comes to Dodging attacks in the rear – which would normally lose a die. However, her special ability Shell means that your opponent suffers a -2 modifier when attacking Dozer from behind. Also, the ability specifies ‘any actions that target the rear arc of this Player’, so that applies to Ranged Attacks, Steals, etc. This means you don’t have to worry too much about positioning Dozer and potentially leaving her exposed to attacks in the back.

You may also be surprised to hear that Dozer is one of the most mobile Players in the game. “Hang on, she’s only got a move of four” you might cry… and you would be right. Although she’s not the fastest, it’s Dozer’s Teleport ability that makes her incredibly mobile. With Teleport, you can pick up Dozer and move her four hexes away, without the need for Evading. This enables her to get out of the tightest of spots and you can bait your opponent into engaging Dozer before simply disappearing and re-appearing over the other side of the arena.

Finally, Dozer’s OverDrive ability allows her to teleport up to six hexes and then tuck into her shell. Once inside her shell, she’s almost impossible to move – so it’s a great way to claim the Active Scoring Zone. It’s also handy for the Capture the Flag scenario because Dozer can teleport onto the flag, grab it and then vanish inside her shell.

Overall Dozer is a force to be reckoned with – and a great Player for those just starting out their OverDrive career. She’s relatively easy to pick up and play and her decent strength typically means she’s going to be causing some decent damage.
